San Diego Solar Contractor Insurance: C-46 Solar

San Diego solar contractor insurance: residential rooftop PV array in late light

North County tract homes in San Marcos still want rooftop arrays finished before the next escrow. East County hillside lots in Alpine and Ramona add County permits on top of the state card. Coastal air on a Point Loma condo rebuild is a different moisture story than an inland-valley hang in Escondido. San Diego solar contractor insurance has to name the solar or electrical class, not a general contractor wrap.

California’s C-46 Solar Card and the C-10 Overlap

The Contractors State License Board licenses solar work under C-46 Solar. That class installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs thermal and photovoltaic solar energy systems. CSLB adopted an 80 kWh incidental-and-supplemental limit for C-46 battery work in 2024. A court injunction halted enforcement of that amendment, and CSLB has agreed to revise it. Check the current CSLB position before bidding storage. C-10 Electrical also names photovoltaic solar energy systems after the same amendment cycle. This page is still the solar installer file. A broader electrical book belongs on California electrical contractor insurance. Our solar contractor insurance guide covers the insurance class split.

Applicants need journey-level experience, exams, and a $25,000 contractor bond. The licensing threshold moved from $500 to $1,000 in labor and materials in January 2025. Many pages still print the old figure. The board does not require general liability for many sole proprietor specialty cards. An LLC with five or fewer people on the license needs at least $1 million aggregate under Business and Professions Code 7071.19. Workers compensation still applies the moment you have help. SB 1455 moved the all-licensee workers compensation rule to January 1, 2028. Plenty of pages still print 2026. That date is wrong.

The Workers Comp Rule San Diego Installers Get Backward

A C-46 or C-10 card is not a free pass to skip workers compensation once payroll starts. A solo operator can often still file a no-employee exemption today. That exemption is not the 2028 universal date. Bid a lighting-only book on a solar policy and the class may not follow the modules. Underwriters ask about that mix because lighting prices like a different trade. The Contractors State License Board writes the C-46 scope in its classification text. Workplace hazard notes for solar installs also appear in OSHA’s solar green-jobs materials.

Coastal Condos and Inland-Valley Rooftops

Coastal salt and humidity on a Point Loma condo hang cause callbacks when racking sits in a damp environment. Those callbacks are workmanship disputes. General liability does not pay them. Professional liability can respond there. A rushed Escondido tract array on a dry inland lot is the same fight in a different climate. Photograph the roof. Write the spec so the invoice matches the class. Equipment moving between North Park, San Marcos, and Ramona jobs sits outside your commercial auto policy the moment it leaves the truck. Schedule it on inland marine. The truck itself belongs on business auto insurance.

San Diego Solar Contractor Insurance for Hillside and Tract Work

Hillside starts in Alpine, Lakeside, and Ramona mean hanging arrays near old utility laterals and steep access. A state license does not replace a County permit in those unincorporated lots. A permit on a job is also a signal to your insurer. The class on the policy has to match work that needs an inspection, not only work that needs a lift. This is not a general contractor page. If you run the whole rebuild, start on San Diego general contractor insurance.

Certificates still win the builder book. Mission Valley and Kearny Mesa owners want additional insured wording before the first module arrives. A solar card with employees and no workers compensation file will not pass that review. Bring the insurance exhibit to us before you sign. We match the endorsements the job actually requires. Spare modules in the shop also need commercial property insurance on the building, not only the installer GL.
