Utah Auto Insurance Requirements: The New 30/65/25 Minimum and PIP

Utah auto insurance requirements work differently from neighboring states, and the limits changed recently. If you drive in Salt Lake City, Provo, or anywhere along the Wasatch Front, here is what Utah mandates and where that minimum leaves you exposed.

Utah’s Minimum Limits Plus PIP

Utah raised its minimum liability limits in January 2025. The current minimum is 30/65/25.

That means $30,000 in bodily injury coverage per person. It means $65,000 per accident. And it means $25,000 in property damage coverage.

Utah also requires Personal Injury Protection. The PIP minimum is $3,000, and it covers your own medical costs after a crash.

Utah Is a No-Fault State

Utah is one of a handful of no-fault states. That changes how a claim starts.

After a crash, you turn to your own PIP coverage first for medical bills, regardless of who caused it. Only after your injuries pass a legal threshold can you pursue the at-fault driver for more.

The catch is the $3,000 PIP minimum. A single emergency room visit can exhaust it fast, so many drivers carry more.

What Liability Still Does Not Cover

Liability pays the people you hurt and the property you damage. It does not pay to repair your own vehicle.

Your own car needs collision and comprehensive coverage. Those are separate from the liability and PIP the state requires.

Being legal is not the same as being protected. The minimum has real gaps.

Where the Numbers Run Out

Picture a crash on I-15 during the evening commute. You cause it, and the other driver is seriously hurt.

The bill passes $30,000. Your per-person limit caps first, even with room on the per-accident total. As this coverage guide explains, the per-person cap applies before the per-accident total is reached.

And the car you hit comes out of the $25,000 property number. When the limits are gone, the rest can fall on you personally.

Review Your Limits Before You Need Them

If your policy predates 2025, confirm it meets the new limits. Pull your declarations page and check your three numbers and your PIP.
