Arizona auto insurance requirements look a lot like Nevada’s, but the details differ. If you drive in Phoenix, Tucson, or anywhere across the state, you need to know what Arizona actually mandates and where that minimum leaves you exposed.
Arizona’s Minimum Liability Limits
Arizona requires drivers to carry liability insurance. The state minimum is 25/50/15.
That means $25,000 in bodily injury coverage per person. It means $50,000 in bodily injury coverage per accident. And it means $15,000 in property damage coverage.
Notice the property damage number. Arizona sets it at $15,000, lower than Nevada’s $20,000. One newer vehicle can pass that figure on its own.
What Liability Does Not Cover
Liability pays the people you hurt and the property you damage. It does not pay for your side of the wreck.
Your own car is not covered by liability. Your own injuries are not covered. Those need separate coverages beyond the minimum the state makes you carry.
Being legal is not the same as being protected. The minimum was built to protect other people, not you.
Where the Numbers Run Out
Picture a crash on the I-10 during rush hour. Two people in the other car go to the hospital.
One has a serious injury. The bill passes $25,000 fast. Your per-person limit caps first, even if room remains on the per-accident total.
When the limits are gone, the injured parties can pursue you personally. Your savings and a chunk of your future wages can be exposed.
Coverage Worth Adding in Arizona
Uninsured motorist coverage matters here. Arizona has a meaningful share of uninsured drivers on the road.
This coverage protects you and your passengers when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. Collision and comprehensive cover your own vehicle. An umbrella policy adds protection above your auto limits if you have assets to defend.
How much should you carry? It depends on what you have to protect. Consumer Reports and the Insurance Information Institute commonly recommend liability limits of 100/300/100, well above any state minimum.
Review Your Limits Before You Need Them
Pull your declarations page and look at your three numbers. Ask whether they would hold up in a real accident.
